Consequences of deviation from the path of Dharma

Deviating from Dharma leads to unpleasant situation. Depending on the extent of deviation, to very difficult situations. The effect of deviating from Dharma is unavoidable. Unrighteousness, practiced in this world, may not at once produce its fruit. Advancing slowly, it cuts off the roots of the person who committed it. If the punishment does not fall on the offender himself, it falls on his sons, if not on the sons, at least on his grandsons. But an iniquity once committed, never fails to produce fruit to him who wrought it. An Adharmi prospers for a while through unrighteousness, then he gains great good fortune, next he conquers his enemies, but at last he perishes branch and root.

Therefore, it is advised to avoid the acquisition of wealth and the gratification of desires, if they are opposed to the Dharma. Acts which may cause pain in the future or are offensive to men are not to be performed in the guise of the law.[6]

Notes: If Dharma is the sustaining principle, deviation from it must lead to very difficult (unsustainable) situations!
